The inaugural Florida Fights FASD Community-Action Summit in October 2010 was a great success.
The Summit began with a welcome reception on October 20, which served as an opportunity for panelists, presenters, out-of-town guests, parents and other participants to meet and share FASD experiences and resources. On October 21, over 60 speakers and attendees participated in the day-long educational forum, with almost 70 others watching via the live webcast.
Panelists and speakers presented to an audience comprised of mental health, pediatric and social services professionals; child advocates and volunteers; representatives from state, private and non-profit substance abuse and adoption agencies; and adoptive parents of children with FASD.
The Summit’s expert presenters hailed from multiple agencies, including:
- Department of Health
- Department of Education
- Children’s Medical Services
- Early Steps
- Department of Children & Families
- Governor’s Office of Drug Control
- Children’s Home Society
- Governor’s Office of Adoption & Child Protection
- The Child Guidance Center
- Zero Exposure Project
- Florida Birth Defects Registry
- Florida Center for Child & Family Development
- Florida Developmental Disabilities Council
Attendees listened to presentations about the current state of FASD in Florida and how to launch effective grassroots campaigns to stop this 100 percent preventable disorder. The Summit kicked off with keynote presentations by Dr. Joseph Chiaro, deputy secretary of Children’s Medical Services of the Florida Department of Health, and Kathryn Shea, LCSW, president and CEO of The Florida Center for Child & Family Development.
Attendees also listened to panels comprised of government services professionals and impacted parties that deal with FASD daily, such as:
- Dr. Mary Beth Seay, Medical Director for the Big Bend Region of Children’s Medical Services
- Dawn Lynch, Operations Review Specialist, Early Steps
- Cyndee Odom, Special Projects Manager, Governor’s Office of Adoption & Child Protection
- Atrica Warr, Operations & Management Consultant Manager, Substance Abuse Program, Florida Department of Children & Families
- Jane Correia, Coordinator, Florida Birth Defects Registry
- Cathy Bishop, Administrator, Bureau of Exceptional Education & Student Services
- Jeffrey Cece, Program Analyst, Governor’s Office of Drug Control
- Denise Costa, adoptive mother of a child with FASD, Florida Interagency Action Group member and Florida Fights FASD Advisory Board member
- Cecily Hardin, FASD Project Coordinator for The Child Guidance Center and Florida Fights FASD Advisory Board member
- Jeana Davis, Professor, Student Success, Florida State College of Jacksonville and adoptive mother of a child with FAS
- Jane Johnson, Executive Director, Children’s Home Society of Florida, North Central Division
After hearing multiple experts discuss their ideas about FASD and how to increase education and prevention, audience members were given an opportunity to express their ideas during interactive brainstorming sessions. Attendees broke into small teams to develop strategies to engage their communities and to identify ways to recruit other torchbearers. Each team wrote their ideas on large flip charts and shared them with the other teams. After the Summit, Florida Fights FASD team members compiled all the ideas that stemmed from the brainstorming sessions and are using them as a foundation for the development of Florida Fights FASD Advocacy Kits.
Summit participants received the FASD Advocacy Kits, which included all the tips and tools necessary to launch and sustain the Florida Fights FASD campaign at the local level. The Torchbearer Advocacy Kits contain sample press releases, instructions on how to contact the media, fact sheets and key messages, examples of media outlets and interview tips. The kits also include a PowerPoint presentation for use with local civic groups, information about a traveling display for use at local health fairs and DVDs of the Summit presentations as reminders for attendees of the great information shared and for the benefit of those who couldn’t attend the Summit or view the live webcast. FASD Torchbearer Advocacy Kits are provided free of charge to anyone interested in becoming a Florida Fights FASD Torchbearer.
